One of the most innovative and multi-award-winning musical stars, Olly Alexander, will represent the United Kingdom at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place in Malmö, Sweden, in May 2024.

Olly proudly announced this news during the final episode of the “Strictly Come Dancing” program on BBC One, captivating the audience in the studio and millions of viewers.

Preparing to release his first self-titled album, Olly Alexander remains one of the most innovative contemporary pop stars worldwide. Two out of three albums from his project Years & Years reached the top spot on the UK Charts, with 10 singles making it to the British Top 40. Recently, the artist was honored with the BRIT Billion Award (for 6.5 billion streams worldwide). Over time, Years & Years evolved from a band into the artist’s solo project, and 2024 is set to mark a completely new chapter in his career. It’s worth noting that Russell T. Davis’ series “It’s a Sin” won the award for the best new dramatic series at the National Television Awards, and Olly himself was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actor in 2022.

Olly Alexander is already an icon, as confirmed by the recent unveiling of his wax figure at Madame Tussauds in London. The artist has headlined festivals, filled the largest arenas at his own concerts, and played a pivotal role in changing British culture forever. Now, he will represent the country on the Eurovision stage.

“Since childhood, I’ve loved watching Eurovision, and I’m incredibly excited to be a part of it next year. As a little boy, I always eagerly anticipated this incredible, joyfully chaotic event, which is a wonderfully mixed bag of musical styles, theatrical performances, genuine emotions, and humor. I truly can’t believe that I’ll be part of this amazing legacy. The opportunity to wave the British flag in the gayest way possible will be an honor for me. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time, and I feel like it’s the right moment to start releasing music under my own name. I am determined to give it my all and provide each of you with a fantastic, unforgettable performance,” commented Olly.

Ben Mortimer, President of Polydor Records, said, “Polydor, which is the British home for artists like ABBA and Loreen, has deep ties to Sweden and Eurovision. We also feel a strong connection to Olly’s pioneering influence on culture. We’ve been working with him for almost a decade. He is an incredible talent, and we are confident he will have a tremendous impact on the UK in the upcoming competition. The opportunity to support him in his efforts to achieve success at Eurovision makes us proud.”

Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment at BBC, added, “The fact that we have managed to convince an artist of Olly Alexander’s caliber to represent the country next year in Malmö indicates that the UK wants to maintain a good streak at Eurovision, since we had the honor of hosting it in Liverpool this year on behalf of Ukraine. Olly is the perfect ambassador for the UK, both as an incredibly talented artist of global fame and a passionate fan of the contest.”

Suzy Lamb, Managing Director of Entertainment and Music at BBC Studios, said, “We are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with Olly Alexander. We want to create something special together in the category of UK performances at the Eurovision Song Contest. Olly is a world-class star, a charismatic performer, and we can’t wait for his performance in next year’s edition.”

The Eurovision song, collaboratively worked on with Olly by Danny L Harle (Caroline Polachek, Dua Lipa), will soon see the light of day.
